Struggling with any aspect of your Moodle or Totara site? Our training can help!

If you are uploading a large file to Moodle or Totara or you need to complete a backup of a large course you may need to increase the maximum file upload limit to be larger than the standard size of 512MB.

As we offer managed e-learning solutions, our technical team will do this increase for you, but here's how they do it:

To increase the maximum file size we need to make a change to the ‘php.ini’ file and add the below lines, the value can be changed depending on the file size you wish to allow.

post_max_size = 500M
upload_max_filesize = 500M

Moodle Maximum file size

We can also make a change to the ‘.htaccess’ file to do the same job, the lines we need to add are below, and again the value can be changed depending on the file size we wish to allow.

php_value upload_max_filesize = 500M
php_value post_max_size = 500M

If we want to change the max file size to a smaller size we can do so without changing the php.ini or .htaccess file by going to our Moodle site -> Site adminsitration -> Security -> Site security settings -> “Maximum upload file size or Totara site -> Site administration -> Security -> Security settings -> “Maximum upload file size and change the ‘Maximum uploaded file size’ to our desired size.

Totara Maximum file size

The previous default size of 512MB will not be available because the new default will be the value we have set in either the php.ini or .htaccess file.

If we want to revert the changes of the max file size we can just delete the lines of code which we added and save the file.
