Hubken's e-learning glossary: SCORM
SCORM
SCORM is an acronym for Shareable Content Object Reference Model. It is a technical standard for e-learning software/courses which enables the software to work across multiple e-learning systems.
By making course content that adheres to the SCORM standard, e-learning developers can be sure that their learning content will work across SCORM compliant learning management systems, regardless of brand or provider.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is it important for a course/LMS to be SCORM compliant?
SCORM courses have an inbuilt level of interoperability, meaning they can function on any SCORM compliant e-learning platform.
This works in the same way a CD can be played on any and all CD players. This is beneficial because if you should decide to invest in SCORM content and change/add e-learning platforms later down the line, you can be sure that your content can be reused.
Our LMS systems, Totara Learn and Moodle, are fully SCORM compliant.
Other than interoperability, what benefits does SCORM provide?
SCORM courses are highly customisable, making them ideal for delivering interactive and highly engaging e-learning content. This means courses can also be enhanced with gamification features.
What's more, SCORM content is mobile friendly and flexible, and works perfectly alongside other interactive content such as H5P.
Where does SCORM content come from?
SCORM content can be made in-house (if you have the technical expertise to do so), purchased via a third party provider, or produced by a learning content developer.
While purchased off-the-shelf or bespoke SCORM content can be costly, its shelf life, reusability and engagement levels make it a worth while investment.
